These findings indicate that a considerable percentage of Generation Z prefers flexible employment over a traditional 9-5 slog.

The desire for greater autonomy, flexibility, and a sense of purpose are the main drivers of the Gen Z entrepreneurial mindset. The younger generation doesn’t view their full-time job as the only way to financial security and professional development. Instead, they pursue alternative ways to display their skills or explore their interests.

This also enables them to become their own bosses and eventually reach the work-life balance that will positively affect their health. Therefore, it’s no surprise that we’re seeing an increase in Gen Z entrepreneurial endeavors.

The Rise of the Side Hustle Economy

The numbers don’t lie—a new survey from EYfound that 39% of Gen Z respondents were juggling multiple gigs, side hustles, and jobs simultaneously. Another survey conducted by Paychex found that about half of Gen Z is employed in two or more jobs. These surveys show that a significant percentage of Gen Z is now interested in doing freelance work or side hustles.

This surge in freelance and entrepreneurial work reflects the major shift in our workplace. From content creation to building startups, Gen Z is leveraging digital platforms and social media channels to build their personal brands and monetize their skills outside the traditional career path. This can also be linked to their desire to have more control over their work and be flexible with their schedules. In fact, a  LinkedIn survey found that 72% of Gen Z have left or considered leaving a job due to a lack of flexible work options.

This explains the rise of the side hustle: Gen Z isn't afraid to look beyond their main profession. Freelancing and side hustles are popular as they seek ways to showcase their skills, pursue their passions, and make a real impact—all while potentially earning some extra money. This entrepreneurial spirit is changing the way we think about careers, and corporations need to take note of this.

Decoding the Gen Z Work Ethos

Gen Z finds deep meaning in their endeavors, prioritizing intrinsic motivators like autonomy, mastery, and purpose more than extrinsic rewards like money and status.

From flexible work arrangements to having the freedom to exercise creativity and innovation, Gen Z craves control over their careers. This autonomy manifests in their desire to follow their own course and make decisions aligned with their values.Mastery is another driving force behind Gen Z’s work ethic. With their insatiable curiosity and thirst for knowledge, they constantly seek challenges that allow them to expand their skill sets and thrive in environments that promote continuous learning and development opportunities.

Most importantly, Gen Z's deep yearning for purpose drives its work ethic. Despite witnessing social issues and challenges, Gen Z seeks to make a positive impact. They want to leave a lasting legacy beyond just a paycheck, whether through social entrepreneurship or a purpose-driven career.

Challenging the Foundations of the Traditional Career Paths

Gen Z’s approach to work, which does not follow established rules, is a direct challenge to the structure of careers as we know them. The desire for self-government, meaningfulness, and balance between professional and personal lives is making companies reconsider the norms of corporate ladders.

This change in mindset will require businesses to be flexible with their employees’ needs, such as allowing them flex-time or job-sharing options, providing opportunities for continuous growth through training programs, among other things, and giving staff members something more than just money-making activities where they can find fulfillment.

Additionally, what has been termed as ‘gig economy’ or freelancing culture among young people today is also transforming traditional entrepreneurship models and reshaping business landscapes in its wake. Intrapreneurship may be one way organizations could keep these talents engaged, while project-based employment opportunities could be another viable option for tapping into this generation.

A New Era of Work

The involvement of Gen Z individuals in our labor force—with their self-sufficiency aspiration, drive for creativity and control, and their refusal to sacrifice life outside office walls for a 9-5 cubicle—has already started triggering necessary adjustments across various industries, leading us to new ways of thinking about career development.

To attract and retain the creative, entrepreneurial power of Gen Z, firms should offer greater adaptability in working hours and flexibility. In addition, embracing “intrapreneurialism” could unlock hidden potentials within the business while promoting more employee control over their work and life.

The future of work is being redefined, and it's up to organizations to evolve if they want to attract the talents of this independent, creative, and tech-savvy generation.
