10 Lessons Learned as the Founder of an EdTech Startup

10 Lessons Learned as the Founder of an EdTech Startup

Bryan Besecker

10 lessons I've learned on helping students reduce stress, build confidence, and explore careers through early self-discovery.

As the Founder and CEO of Pathspark, I'm on a mission to transform the career exploration process for high school students. Pathspark provides a self-discovery platform leveraging assessments, reflection tools, and guided activities to help teens discover their passions and find purpose.

After witnessing the stress far too many students experience when making uninformed, high-stakes career and college decisions, I felt compelled to solve this problem. Now, by equipping students with self-knowledge and the ability to align their innate strengths to potential careers, we empower them to pursue fulfilling lives.

Here are ten critical lessons that I've learned about empowering students to make confident and informed career decisions.

Lesson 1: Students Feel Overwhelmed

Students often feel overwhelmed navigating potential career paths because they don’t know where to start. It’s important not to assume they intrinsically understand their own interests. Instead, guide them by breaking the exploration process into more manageable steps.

Lesson 2: Starting Early Eases Stress

Beginning career planning early helps students avoid last-minute confusion and stress when deciding on college majors and career options. It also enables teens to prevent unnecessary education debt by choosing paths aligned to their interests and strengths.

Lesson 3: Structured Reflection Creates Confidence

Many teens lack independent career decision-making experience. A structured, guided, and judgment-free space allows them to authentically explore interests and build self-confidence. Understanding personal strengths informs better choices.

Lesson 4: Self-Discovery is Iterative

Students shouldn’t expect immediate clarity. Encourage an iterative process beginning with brainstorming then gradual refinement as common themes emerge. This helps piece together interests over time.

Lesson 5: Authenticity Resonates

Genuine self-reflection aids crafting compelling application essays. College admissions see through inauthenticity, so it’s crucial teens write truthfully about interests, goals, and how the school can help achieve their mission.

Lesson 6: Soft Skills Critical for Careers

Hard skills no longer differentiate top candidates for the same roles. Creativity, communication, personal branding and other soft skills are equally valuable. Students can practice through blogging, public speaking, or networking.

Lesson 7: Lack of Purpose Creates Crisis

A focus on purpose early in life guides fulfilling career paths, whereas lack of direction exacerbates declining teen mental health and motivation. By understanding their “why”, students gain meaning.

Lesson 8: Enjoyment Fuels Great Work

Loving what you do enables greater dedication and impact. Without career clarity, finding enjoyable work is impossible. Guiding teens to explore interests identifies paths they’re passionate about pursuing.

Lesson 9: Focus on Skills and Interests

Rather than fixating on specific job titles, focusing exploration on employable skills and categories of interest creates flexibility. This lens shows teens multiple potential careers aligning to what motivates them.

Lesson 10: Exploration Reduces Pressure

Students feel less overwhelmed when they understand achieving immediate clarity is not the end goal. Figuring out interests is an evolving discovery process without a fixed endpoint. This mentality empowers actionable exploration.

The path to career clarity is not linear but an evolving journey of self-discovery and growth. Through these ten lessons, we've explored the importance of early exploration, structured reflection, embracing soft skills, and focusing on individual strengths and interests.

The goal is not immediate clarity but fostering a mindset of curiosity and resilience. As students embark on this journey, remember that each step, no matter how small, is a leap towards a future filled with purpose and passion.
